The GDR cultivated international solidarity with the Global South, especially supporting anti-colonial movements in North Africa, making Algeria central to its progressive image. Internally, however, this rhetoric masked systemic racism toward foreign contract workers from Algeria, Vietnam, Mozambique, and Angola, who faced discrimination, exclusion, and violence. Algerian workers were kept segregated in dormitories and denied integration, subjected to both state restrictions and everyday racism. The state celebrated Algeria's anti-imperialist struggle while marginalizing Algerian citizens within its borders, betraying socialist equality. The GDR's 1989 collapse exposed this contradiction: the promise of racial egalitarianism had been systematically undermined by the exploitation of all non-European migrant workers.
