A band from Tokyo falling hard for Irish traditional music sounds unlikely—until you hear how it happened. I’m joined by Kozo of Ojizo, a Japanese Celtic trio bringing flute-forward tunes, accordion drive, and string rhythm to the U.S., including an August 11 stop at the Ancient Order of Hibernians Hall in Redford, Michigan.

Kozo shares his journey from school-band trumpet to discovering Irish music through Dervish and finding his voice on flute. We explore the connections between Irish music, bluegrass and country, and the growth of Japan’s Irish music scene over the past 20 years.

We also talk touring America, Ojizo’s changing setlists, their upcoming album, and the intimacy of small-room sessions. Plus, Kozo plays a tune on flute during the conversation.

If you love Irish flute, Celtic music, global folk traditions, and discovering great touring bands, hit play and discover Ojizo.
