DEEP/ART

Some of it is the sort of thing you could have heard on a particularly high-class advert for ice cream in 1987. Or you might come across it on an old VHS tape of an avant-garde opera recorded in 1988.

Perhaps it's quirky yet cerebral opening music for an arts review show in 1989. And maybe it suddenly appeared on the soundtrack when the TV station went wrong during any of those three years, and disappeared into the ether when the fault was fixed.

A mixture of music that's often commercial but not always commercially available, plus some counterweight in the form of well known art rock types who may have been featured on that aforementioned arts programme. The end of the yuppies and the Japanese economic bubble draws near, and so does the 1990s...
