Never seen Moulin Rouge so I didn't know that connection. It's funny how everyone's generation determines how and where they first get to hear a standard. I was a teen in the 1970s so I first came across Nature Boy when George Benson had a big hit with his In Flight album.

But the song was already about thirty years old when Benson, and Ella and Joe Pass, recorded their versions. The story of it's origins as the mystically inspired composition of a long-haired vegan 1940s proto-hippie called Eden Ahbez is a fascinating one (for music nerds anyway) so this YouTube summary is recommended viewing for anyone who wants to find out more.

@LordBrettHeadset one of the tracks I love and look for interesting covers of. ones worth checking include the Ahmad Jamel version, Central Line, Coltrane, Jose Feliciano, Ray & James, Lorez Alexandra, nice deep house one from Mattius Heilbronn, and just many covers out there to check out. the Nat King Cole is still one of the top for me.

@playjazzloud Well, I've heard the Feliciano and Jamal versions, and I did feature the Coltrane one in an earlier set, but the rest of that list is new to me. Will definitely be checking some of those out.

Central Line were a surprise, but I guess the tune would still have had traction on that scene from the days of the Benson version?

This TOTP clip from 1983 made me smile anyway - top marks to the stylist! Mostly going for Robin Hood there, but that's no reason to rule out a Bedouin headdress.

Particularly like the singer miming the synth solo on a 19th century "serpent" horn of a kind that I have only previously seen in the Hornimans Museum....

Waaay back when, Carmen Lundy did a cover of My Favourite Things in....<googles>...1995, which was big with the people who like jazzy soul and soulful jazz, and that was probably my introduction to her. So I checked in with friends then who were deeper into the soul side of things than me and they gently informed me that I was about ten years late to the party 😄

I hadn't thought about her in a while when she released the Code Noir album in 2017 (with Jeff Parker from Tortoise as musical director) but I liked that a lot so it was a reminder to have a periodic dig around in her back catalogue.

When Will You Learn is from an album she made in 2014 called Soul To Soul.

I just can't be arsed to feign perpetual omniscience. I'm always catching up, in any decade.
About 95% of the music in any of your sets is off my radar. That's one of the reasons that I listen to them.
Music never runs out and that's one of the many things that I love about it.

BTW I like that Carmen Lundy made an album called Soul To Soul, but I do feel that Soul To Soul should have reciprocated with an album called Carmen Lundy. In the same way that a band called Catford should have formed in Japan to acknowledge the band called Japan from Catford.

The only artist who really grasped this principle was Nick Lowe, who responded to Bowie's "Low" LP with and EP called "Bowi"

Hi Andras! Know what you mean about the summer but there's definitely a change in the air in London.

I like to imagine you prepping your dinner to this set in Berlin. I do pretty much put them together to last about the length of time that it takes me to knock up a vegetable curry.
