papamango

the *perfect* soundtrack to a sunny Tuesday off work - lush as ever, plus a little more so under the circumstances! bless ya cotton socks M'Lord..! P🙏🌞👋

Lord Brett Headset

🙏😎🧡

papamango

@LordBrettHeadset maybe the best version of To Love Somebody I've heard (...although I do hold a special place for the one by Mule; an acquired taste though it may be - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emsaJvOI94w ).
other stand-outs for me were the Rita Payes one (oh yeah, latin trombone welcome here), the Jack Wilkins one (flat out cool), Strawberry Fields by Bill Frisell (of course!), the Alice Boyd song (gorgeous), the Beesau piece and the closer by Ichika Nito (all added to my field notes for further investigation)... cheers!

Lord Brett Headset

@papamango I'd find it really hard to choose a favourite To Love Somebody. Maybe Roberta Flack's stately slo-mo take at a pinch. And I usually have the seven of the Nina Simone in my bag for Wavy Gravy sessions. Starting to think that I need that Rozetta Johnson on vinyl as well...

That's another tune that I'd happily hear featured in an hour-long version excursion.

Who's going to recommend me some reggae versions? I know the Bunny Scott and The Triibe one, but I bet there's others out there.

Glad you found so much to like. TLOU landed on that Beesau track for his last set as well. 🙂

Lord Brett Headset

@LordBrettHeadset PS Just listened to about thirty seconds of the Mule one - you're on your own there mate! 😄

(But I bet it's still better than the Tony Hadley one. Hope I go to my grave without ever being subjected to that.)

papamango

@LordBrettHeadset 🤣🤣... I did suggest the Mule one just might be an acquired taste (I like it for association with some 30yr old memories).
ha ha - what a relief we're on the same page re Tony Hadley (...singing anything!) 😄

[soulfusion]

Mmmmhhm.... relaxed sounds with Gil and Brian amongst others and one of my favourite "standards" Red Clay in a beautiful version :-)

Lord Brett Headset

With you there sf, I'd be happy to listen to a whole version excursion set of Red Clay covers. So many good ones around, instrumental and vocal.

[soulfusion]

Oh yes, apart from a nice version of Soil & "Pimp" Sessions and the one of Mark Murphy I love the most Freddie's live interpretation with the mighty Joe Henderson from the 1984 "Classics" Live Album. But you probably know it, don't you?

Lord Brett Headset

@soulfusioncologne2 No, I don't remember ever hearing that - will be off to check that out straight away.🙏
Here's a link if anyone else fancies it -

Lord Brett Headset

@soulfusioncologne2 And, yes, Mark Murphy and Soil & Pimp Sessions were two that I thought off straight away. And this one -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t23NlYsBwHA

Lord Brett Headset

@LordBrettHeadset Damn, that live version's good! Bobby Hutcherson as well, and everyone sounding great.
And I liked that little "easter egg" moment around ten minutes in when Freddie Hubbard starts playing Sunny because the piano changes have become so similar.
That was a great way to start my morning.🙂🙏🙌

[soulfusion]

@LordBrettHeadset ...you're a good observer with that description ;-) I wrote before twice to your profile but the answers have disappeared?! Have a good day and a nice easter.

Lord Brett Headset

@soulfusioncologne2 You too mate - hope the sun's shining in Cologne as well 🌞

Thanks, I needed that.

Lord Brett Headset

You're welcome!

And thanks for keeping the sets coming at your end, always impressed by what you put together and how you put it together.

pfktoledo

Beautiful mellow listen, John! I liked how you blended the relaxed grooves with the pieces that stretched out so nicely, and that ringing guitar was a great way to end.

Lord Brett Headset

Thanks Patrick. Yes, love that Ichika Nito closer. It's just so...affirmative.

schmichael23

Beautiful morning music wherever you are ( I could hardly be any farther away from south London)

Lord Brett Headset

Cheers schmichael. Where are you then? It's always good to know how/where/when these shows are getting a listen. 🙂

schmichael23

@LordBrettHeadset Thank you I am a regular listener and fan of your show-here in far north Queensland-Australia.
Cheers!

Lord Brett Headset

@schmichael23 Thanks @schmichael23 , and thanks for the regular listens. 🙏
Knowing that people all over the world are checking these sets out is one of the things that keeps me putting them together.
Reminds me of the days when everyone was a bit more utopian about the internet (before it found its niche as lie factory and tyrant-facilitator).

schmichael23

@LordBrettHeadset love the show and the company of passionate music lovers here, I’ve been using Mixcloud for 3 years and am noticing that the same people, both content providers and listeners are often listening to the same shows.

Lord Brett Headset

@schmichael23 Been around here for about the same time, and I agree. It's come to feel like these sets are part of a larger "scene" now. I like that.

Just hope that doesn't strike the casual observer as cliquey. I'm always up for chatting about music with anyone who stops by in the comments. Each one teach one!

schmichael23

@LordBrettHeadset For sure ! I feel its keeping the Spirit of independent radio alive , whereas it doesnt exist for me here on a local level, I get to connect to a global resource of great music and people. Especially good for me as I am pretty isolated in a remote area. Thanks again for your excellent show!

Lord Brett Headset

@schmichael23 That's what I like about Mixcloud as well, the opportunity to have your own customised radio station with a hand-picked international roster of DJs.

Spread love! ✊🧡

schmichael23

@LordBrettHeadset Thats it ! Spoiled for choice , definitely a saving grace of the (dead) internet.

playjazzloud

lovely Brian & Gil action. did you hear one of the new tracks coming from Brian Jackson called "it's your world" serious 🔥

Lord Brett Headset

Yes, I've been hearing people play that. Sounding good.
The Gil Scott-Heron original is often in my mate Gaffer's boxes when we play out with Wavy Gravy.

playjazzloud

getting through this a second time. was a bit in and out of the room first time round! great vibes :)

Lord Brett Headset

Going to take that because you are officially the Boss of Vibes after your last At The Jazz Club session. ✊

souljazzfunksters

great session ,.,, eclectic and vibing non stop. Nice work

Lord Brett Headset

Cheers SJF, and thanks for your ears 🙏

A lovely selection of weather appropriate and summer beckoning tunes John. Beautiful guitar throughout, especially loved Ernest Ranglin’s contribution to the Soul Revivers track.
What a voice Rita Payes has, makes me melt. Thank you for that introduction.
Funny you were drawn to guitars for this comp. I’ve been listening to loads of guitar driven stuff lately. Maybe it’s the weather, maybe they’re putting something in the South London water??

Lord Brett Headset

Guitar vibes? Aha my friend, all minds must merge as one once they have drunk of the mystic waters of South London...

Ranglin sounding like a don there, agreed. In fine form for such a veteran.

Only just started digging into Rita Payes, came via her mum, guitarist Elizabeth Roma who also plays in her daughter's band sometimes. Payes has got a wonderful voice, but I also like her habit of stepping back from the mic to throw in an insouciant trombone solo now and then. ( Female singer-trombonists, who's in that club? Is it just her and Laetitia Sadier?)

@GillianoT and I have just got tickets to see Rita Payes at the Union Chapel on Weds 19th Nov 2025. Interested in joining us? Hope her mum's in the band.

@LordBrettHeadset definitely interested in Rita’s concert, I think I risk falling hard for her if seen live though!!

Lord Brett Headset

@compositionunknown You might just have to bank on the anaphrodisiac qualities of the trombone to rein in your ardour.😎
(apologies to trombonists everywhere)

@LordBrettHeadset I often have 😄
