I can imagine that Nina Simone track being a bit over-ripe for some tastes, but I like it a lot. And the whole "Baltimore" album in fact, even though Simone herself was supposed to be a bit tepid about it, and found it overproduced. The title track is a classic for starters, one of those covers that ends up with more kudos than the original.

ps - that opening Lion Babe track was great and the loop in it that was on the tip of memory.
me thinks it was 'Music to my ears' by Mocky - do you know it? (reckon you'd like...)

Cheers papa. Whosampled reckons you're right about Lion Babe / Mocky. Mocky's already on my "investigate further " list but that list keeps growing. You know how it is...

Good pop always beats bad posh in my book, and I'd say that Lion Babe exemplify good pop for all kinds of reasons. I think there's a fair bit of lightly worn creativity in their short, catchy tunes. Try playing their "Treat Me Like Fire" back to back with its source material, Eunice Collins' "At The Hotel" - that's my idea of using sampling as an imaginative tool for composition.

I suppose that Feliciano tune and something like Buckley's "Buzzin Fly" both fall into the folk-funk bag at a pinch? Up for more of that sort of thing if anyone's got any recommendations.

(Long shot but...COS was musing about coming into town for the Akusmi date at Kings Place on Sat Feb 24th. Don't suppose that you could be tempted? Bit more of a schlep for you, I know!)

Akusmi looks well interesting, but it's difficult for me to plan at the moment... and won't lie, it would be a little bit of a haul these days (...if only I had to go into the big smoke for work sometimes still!).

Maybe we'll get out your way one day. Had a discussion with some friends the other week about co-ordinating a visit to their daughter in Bristol with a gig if anything interesting turned up. Would keep you posted if so.

...but I'm never convinced that those top two aren't first equal. :)

Thanks pfktoledo, I did wonder whether I was pushing my luck here, and I might be the only listener who liked the whole set from beginning to end.

Talking of which...a very poignant ending when Bill Frisell's trio played the Union Chapel in London last night. Very loose and impressionistic for the first half, but they closed out with Follow Your Heart/People/What The World Needs Now/Give Peace A Chance. Lovely.

Any good gigs in Toledo lately?

Well I know I liked it from beginning to end and suspect most did. The Frisell sounds great, and I wish I could report unusual seismic activity on the live music scene here, but alas . . .

Ah well, Toledo's turn next probably. :)

Oh, and the Rosie Turton rework is fabulous 👌🏼 Massively enjoyed hearing that. Have you heard the Scrimshaw Amanda Whiting versions?

Cheers COS, I love the way that Rosie Turton track builds. Something really original as well about music that puts trombone and violin front and centre together. Violinist Johanna Burnheart's music is well worth a listen as well.

Haven't heard the Scrimshire versions of Amanda Whiting, will check those out.

Just noticed that Akusmi are playing at Kings Place in February, will probably try to get to that - someone else you put me on to!

PS Enjoyed your last LWSTD special as well. (Surprised and delighted to see Joe Thomas on the tracklist, one for old jazz funkers. Still got the LP of "Sweet Cocoa" that I found on a barrow in Brixton market back in the 80s.)

We'll have to try to meet up. (The Likes Of Us was at Greg Foat at Kings Place last weekend but he didn't spot me there unfotunately.)
