It’s the genre that isn’t a genre. The term ‘Balearic’ rather refers to a certain vibe and approach to DJ’ing that somehow encapsulates the sun-drenched and free-spirited feel of Ibiza. Originating from the late 80s when a group of local DJ’s made the island’s cosmopolitan holiday clientéle dance to a truly eclectic soundtrack, where soul, funk and acid house records would rub shoulders with artists like Sade and The Cure – all within the same DJ set. It was a massive inspiration for some of the key people that went on to shape UK club culture around the same time.
This mix is all about the biggest Balearic classics of that period. A number of the most pivotal tunes that were staples in the record bags of pioneer DJ’s like Alfredo Fiorito, Jean-Claude Maury and Leo Mas back then.
