Quite often, people ask me, “What is your favorite Rapid City band of all time?” expecting me to say Via or Dissent. Resin? Social Joke, perhaps? My one and only answer usually surprises them: I have too many to name.
The Rapid City DIY scene formed in the mid-eighties according to local historians. Meanwhile, I was 7 years old at the time, listening to Iron Maiden and Ozzy Osbourne’s ‘Bark at The Moon’ at my older brother’s behest. In 1992 my family moved to Rapid City. I thought for sure thrash metal was my calling but fate had pre ordained a different meeting. Enter: KTEQ-FM. Without that station I’d probably wouldn't have been able to reach my musical destiny.
I have literally been waiting to make this playlist for decades. Even though these bands haven't received a ton of exposure, the Rapid City scene is still somewhat of a secret – a secret I’m glad you’re in on.
