Shoegaze

Coined in the late 80s referring to a band gazing down at their own lyrics, shoegaze eventually morphed into the pre-indie scene in 1990s London. Eventually becoming known as "The Scene That Celebrates itself," shoegaze was overshadowed during the grunge development in the U.S. Shoegaze utilizes etheral vocals, shimmering guitar work, and emphasizes community involvement; many nu gaze (modern shoegaze) bands are continuing this tradition.
