Originating in the late '80s and eventually giving way to acts such as Battles, American Football, and others, math rock emphasizes complexity over all else. Utilizing nonstandard time signatures and abrupt changes in tempo/key, math rock is definitely for the intellectual rockers out there. Math rock is influenced by progressive rock, freeform jazz, and later punk sounds focusing on fast, decisive jamming.
