Originating as early on with Tibetan monk chants, 'drone' really wasn't given a name or community until developments in the 1950s. It has essentially existed for as long as there have been sounds and ears to listen to them. Drone utilizes long, sustained tones and field records to match the simplicity of audio environments or 'soundscapes.' Minimalism at its finest, there's a lot to be shared with the ambient music scene.
