This smattering of genres follows the origins of Downtempo/Chill from the 80s til today. What makes the field so intriguing is that its an amorphous meshwork. A lot of the early tracks that contributed to a larger sense of what Downtempo is today were originally included as interludes or instrumental connector tracks.
Downtempo as a style owes as much to accident and semiotic conglomeration as Rock.
"Fitzgerald said it long ago: it is not a question of taking off for the South Seas, that is not what determines a voyage. There are not only strange voyages in the city but voyages in place: we are not thinking of drug users, whose experience is too ambiguous, but of true nomads. We can say of the nomads, following Toynbee's suggestion: They Do Not Move. They are nomads by dint of moving, not migrating, of holding a smooth space that they refuse to leave, that they leave only in order to conquer and die. Voyage in place: that is the name of all intensities." -Deleuze and Guattari
