Streaming Saturdays, 3-5 pm Central. whyr.org; syndicated on the Pacifica Network (US) & featured radio show on www.allaboutjazz.com Roland Kirk: “we provide the gifts and you deliver the message”. Thanks for visiting G&M. We play jazz, the real deal, irrespective of era or style. We look for a memorable melody or a deep groove. We listen to 1000’s of new and old tracks/year, even the awful stuff. Your host has collected jazz since he was 10 years old and has been doing jazz radio since 17. We hope you’ll make G&M your jazz source and visit weekly. RECORD COMPANIES! We do accept promos, but they have to meet our standard of excellence. Keep the music strong and enjoy this timeless music!

This coming week on Gifts & Messages (Show 388): the August 20, 1969 'Bitches Brew' session (in which Don Alias rhythmically saves the day on the 9th take - no edits on this one). We celebrate the 100th birthday of Anita O'Day with 'moon' songs in honor of the lunar landing 50 years ago. Also the 100th birthday of Lennie Tristano with a couple of rarities, including a hotel session with Charlie Parker & Kenny Clarke playing the phonebook. And a compare & contrast on 2 Wayne Shorter tunes recorded by Wayne on Super Nova & by Miles Davis on 'Water Babies'. We continue our review of early Blue Note 78s with BN-12 from Pete Johnson @ the 88s; a couple of classics from Horace Silver & Sonny Stitt (featuring the B-3 of Ms. Perri Lee, who was a music major at Southern University in Baton Rouge many years ago, as I found out from recent research. Previously I thought it was Shirley Scott under a pseudonym!). And there's the usual dose of 21st century, mostly 'Wonderful', music (check it out and you'll 'get it':). You'll enjoy the music & learn something too. Take it with you and get upfront tracklists on SELECT.

Once I get done with the sequencing & paperwork for the regular August birthdays show (389), we'll get our next Monk A2Z segment up for our SELECT listeners.
