Pete Chaston Doo-Wop Show #7 for Rock-it Radio, produced and co-hosted by René Davids in the Netherlands. By the time that this show was made in February 2006, Pete had already started producing his own prerecorded shows, so this edition was never used and stayed in the can for 16½ years. Enjoy this previously unreleased blast from the past!

Pete Chaston (*1943—†2022) was a retired meteorologist who volunteered as a doo-wop deejay on various radio stations like KCXL 1140 AM (1996–2004), KRKT Rock-it Radio (2006–2020) and KPGZ-lp 102.7 FM (2017–2022). He died on Wednesday, June 15, 2022 in Kearney, Missouri, at the age of 78.

Doo Wop Shows

I still have a few dozen of Pete's old Rock-it Radio shows, but producing prerecorded radio shows at home behind the computer was never Pete's greatest passion, or at least not something that he had much talent for, so some of those shows sounded quite bad.

I could just upload all those "archived" Rock-it Radio shows that I still have "as is", just like they used to sound on the Rock-it Radio site, but since I can publish them in near-FM stereo quality for free here on Mixcloud, I have decided to edit them all and to replace all the music, jingles and promos with better (stereo) copies that most listeners will probably find a little bit more enjoyable than those slightly distorted "lo-fi" copies that were originally published on the Rock-it Radio site.

Of course, the audio quality of Pete's prerecorded announcements from those shows is still (almost) just as poor as how they used to sound in those so-called "archived" shows that various people may have downloaded at the time. I still don't know exactly how Pete produced those shows, but his announcements often sounded as if he had just recorded those with a memo recorder app on his smartphone, or with a cheap microphone that was plugged straight into his PC. Sometimes those recordings were ridiculously noisy, or much too loud and badly distorted, while Rock-it Radio's low-bitrate audio format also limited to frequency range to about 8 kHz, which is hardly better than AM radio quality.

Luckily though, Pete didn't really talk all that much during those shows. Often he would play four songs and one or two jingles before introducing the next six songs, so even though those shows were named after him, Pete could usually only be heard talking for less than seven minutes per show of nearly 72 or 80 minutes (the maximum running time of an audio CD), so those shows normally contained more than an hour of almost non-stop music that could easily be replaced with better recordings from other sources, so that is what I do.

In order to improve the audio quality even further, I should probably just cut out all those old announcements and just announce all those songs myself, but since I could never completely disguise my Dutch accent for long, that would probably make me the new self-proclaimed "worst deejay of the world", so for the time being I'll just limit myself to "playing some of the best music of the world" in the best possibly audio quality and splicing in Pete's original announcements for the "instant nostalgia" of hearing that familiar voice again.
