House music couldn't exist without samples taken from disco: making records "with other people's pieces" in 1987-88 was within the reach of many thanks to computers, with "Pump up the volume" European house emerged from the underground and entered the charts and the record companies smelled the deal. In Italy, for example, the smart guy in the situation was Claudio Cecchetto, who peppered the LP "For President" (1988) with samples for the launch of Jovanotti. Very few people know it, but the hookline of "Mix" ("When you make the mix) comes from the same source as the hookline of "Pump up the volume", i.e. "I know you got soul" by Eric B & Rakim (in turn based on a hit by James Brown). When around 1989/90 the indie scene in and around Manchester came to the fore, the sampler became a "creative musical instrument" and no longer just a "wonderful machine" that steals other people's phrases, but make music seriously.
