Earlier in the year, I was feeling inspired by the Marijata song "No Condition Is Permanent" in the wake of the worldwide COVID pandemic. I started gatherings some songs, and while I was compiling a couple of things happened: 1) Manu Dibango & Tony Allen passed away & 2) worldwide protests of racism erupted in the wake of police murders in the US. As I was processing all of these events, I felt it would be fitting to re-shape this mix as a tribute to the 2 greats of African music and also focus on more current sounds, to highlight the ongoing work of musicians influenced by the afrobeat tradition. Music from Nigeria, Ghana, Congo, France, UK, Mali, Benin, Sierra Leone, Canada, South Africa, Somalia, USA, Cuba, Cameroon, Brazil, Jamaica, & Japan are all represented in this raucous mix celebrating music from & influenced by the African diaspora, and to commemorate the lasting contributions of Manu Dibango & Tony Allen.
