If you haven’t yet checked it out, “Shut Up & Sing” is an eye-opening documentary about what happened to The Dixie Chicks after Natalie Maines had the temerity to voice her opinion in front of a concert audience in London.
Time and Place: March 2003 - tens of thousands marching in the streets to protest the just-launched Shock And Awe campaign in Iraq – world opinion almost unanimously against the USA’s unilateral attack.
And what was it she said? “Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas.”
The Dixie Chicks returned to the United States to a firestorm of protest drummed up by country music stations all across the country. And, if you haven’t been paying attention the last decade or so, they’re all owned by just a handful of media corporations. So the documentary serves as a searing indictment of the power of today’s corporate America to silence dissent.
So, hey Led Zep, Fleetwood Mac, Leonard Cohen, and Traffic, shut up and play!
