Every year since I was in high school I’ve had a tradition of compiling my favorite songs of the year and putting them together as a single mix. At first they were on cassette, then CD, and now digital. I only have a couple of rules:
1. I have to have acquired the songs sometime within the preceding year or else have been re-listening to them a lot during that time.
2. Everything has to end up sounding good together and in sequence, because a mix isn’t random, a mix is a carefully constructed montage of sound.
