Stereophonic recording technology entered the record industry in the late 50s, but it would take a while to catch on. Producers and recording engineers thus prioritized the mastering of the mono mixes of records before the stereo mixes (if they even bothered with a stereo mix at all). For many collectors and vinyl obsessives (your humble host included), the mono mixes are THE definitive versions of many of the great records of the 60s, possessing a "punchier" and more immediate sound than their stereo counterparts, and often more accurately representing the true artistic intentions of their creators. In this episode, Atmospheric Rivers pays tribute to the monophonic recording, sampling some of the best recorded during its final days.
