In 1847 the Choctaw Nation donated $170 to the Irish people during the Great Hunger. 170 years later a delegation from the Choctaw Nation came to Midleton to witness the inauguration of the Kindred Spirits memorial - a site specific art installation designed and made by Alex Pentek. This special radio show tells the story of the memorial and includes interviews with Alex Pentek and Chief Gary Batton of the Choctaw Nation, amongst others.
The music in the show comes from recordings made at the launch of performances from the Youghal Pipe band, Comhaltas EoChoill and members of the Choctaw delegation. The show also includes excerpts from a speech given by Uachtarán na hÉireann Michael D Higgins when he hosted a delegation from the Choctaw nation on June 20, 2017, two days after the public event in Midleton.
Produced and presented by Éanna Dowling and Will McGoldrick
