The Devil-Doll (1936)

Tod Browning and horror have been synonymous for a while, but things weren't always that way. By 1936, Browning was on the outs with many in the industry, and even this inventive and entertaining little movie couldn't do much to save him. In 1936's 'The Devil-Doll', Browning enlists the help of Erich Von Stroheim and Guy Endore to adapt this strange Abraham Merritt story about a criminal scientist's dying creation, shrunken beings that could be controlled by the mind. When Paul Lavond, played charismatically by Lionel Barrymore, realizes this experiment could work in favor of his revenge plot, he goes to all lengths--even including a bit of cross-dressing!
