J'Accuse (1938)

A dark cloud is coming over us here at the 100 Years of Horror podcast, with war on the horizon in Europe. Never ones to shy away from bloody conflict, the Phantom Erik and Lester Reaper are reporting on France in this episode as they cover the 1938 war horror, 'J'Accuse'. Director Abel Gance took his political commentary against World War I and reworked it for this remake of his 1919 film of the same name. This time, he takes on the inevitable second World War, filming both a melodrama surrounding the emotions of war and a horror picture about the terrifying atrocities it commits. We'll take a look at some other films that blurred the lines between war dramas and horror, highlighting how the two have more in common than perhaps a first glace could give.
