Let’s face it: AOR or yacht rock were never too popular genres here in Finland.
When the smooth West Coast sounds of Steely Dan, The Doobie Brothers, Toto etc. conquered the world in the late 70s – early 80s, the Finnish majority was heavily favoring hard rock or punk over soft rock. Maybe it’s the cold Finnish winter and the hot Californian sounds that are hard to fit together – who knows.
Luckily there are always those musicians who decide to go their own way: a few open-minded Finnish artists dared to sail on the warmer musical waters too.
Both covers of soft rock classics and strong original AOR compositions can be found from Finnish records. They are usually somewhat hidden: either on the flipside of a popular schlager 7” or perhaps on some obscure LP from a totally forgotten Finnish 70s rock artist.
My Illan valinnat series sheds some light on these smooth Finnish gems that never got the attention they deserved.
