Kate Hutchinson: Gnawa special featuring James Holden and Hive Mind Records // 15-02-19

Kate was joined by cosmic synth shaman James Holden to delve into Moroccan gnawa, a ritualistic style of trance-inducing traditional music that was brought across the Sahara hundreds of years ago and which is performed in night-long ceremonies that are said to cure people of their ills. Holden plays some of his collaborations from over the years with the late gnawa legend Maalem Mahmoud Guinia and his son, Houssam Gunia, and talks to Kate about the intricacies of making a modular synth work with such expressive music.

Plus there's a guest mix of unheard gnawa tracks from Brighton's Hive Mind Records, who are releasing Houssam's new record, Mosawi Swiri, on 22 February. The mix features tracks from the 80s and 90s that haven't been heard before outside of Morocco.
