Getting a new dog, What Would Jeff Do? Dog Training Tip of the Day #172

I am often asked about what are the first things you should do when you get a new dog, most of these questions are around a dog that is not a puppy, so the philosophy is similar, for young puppies 8 weeks to 5 months, it is much different than the response for a dog older than 6 months. The first thing you should do is lots of structure, routine and hold back on affection (this is a hard one). Most folks did not get a dog to not show the dog affection. We have to be careful though with moving into affection too quick before we have more information on the dog. We cannot go by what we have been told by where the dog came from, both the good and the bad. We have to find out on our own. The dog may have behaved a certain way with the last owners than the dog will with us, both good and not so good behaviors. Every house has some variables that affect the dog, the humans being the big one, we have seen great dogs go to a home and be a disaster and we have seen dogs with both minor and seri
