Paul O'Brien's lecture on Flo Clancy to Kilrush & District Historical Society 29 Mar 2016

"This is the size of your apples, they are scarce this year and the robbers plentiful": Businesswomen in provincial Ireland, the letters of Flo Clancy, 1938-1948

The above comment neatly illustrates the biting wit of Flo Clancy. In a remarkable collection of letters, written over the course of her lifetime, she commented on almost every aspect of life in Kilrush - from weddings to funerals, to lottery winners and sweepstakes losers... who got what and who was left out in the cold! The letters offer an insight into Kilrush in the early decades of the twentieth century while also revealing the outlook of a loyal friend and businesswoman with an eye for a bargain and a love of afternoon tea!

Dr Paul O'Brien is the secretary of Kilrush and District Historical Society. He lectures in Mary Immaculate College (University of Limerick).

Growing up in 56 Moore Street which is next door to Clancy's I can recount several stories about Rose & Flo.My older brothers have more memories than I have. Our house belonged to Clancy's before my father purchased it in about 1945.I really enjoyed your talk on Flo's letters and I wonder did she comment on her next door neighbours Paul & Teresa Keating my parents.Well done and thank you.
