John Treacy's lecture to Kilrush & District Historical Society

On Thursday, 25 February 2016, Dr John Treacy, director of the San Marcos Project, delivered this lecture, entitled "Exploring County Clare's Armada past and the search for the San Marcos". The San Marcos was a Portuguese galleon lost during the 1588 Armada. The San Marcos Project is a community initiative with the goal of establishing the identity of the ship wrecked at Mutton Island in 1588 and locating the final resting place of her crew. The project has carried out detailed sonar and dive surveys at the Mutton Island site and has conducted a landward archaeo-geophysical survey at the reputed Tuama na Spáinneach burial site at Spanish Point.
John discusses the reconciliation of folklore and scientific evidence in relation to the San Marcos story and details some of the exciting results so far.
John also reveals the latest exciting news about plans for the 2016 survey season and discusses the wrecks of San Esteban at Doonbeg and the Annunciada at Scattery Roads.
