Throughout the 80's the British music newspaper NME (New Musical Express) gave away a series of 'free' compilation cassette tapes with many of their monthly issues. Almost entirely, they were compiled by Roy Carr, a renowned English music journalist and writer, with a little help from some friends. Primarily it was a marketing exercise to attract a wider readership as the paper went through the transition from being a Rock based journal to something with more general appeal. I collected many of these tapes from '81 until about '87. and they introduced me to a lot of new music that I'd not heard before. Sadly, in the years since they've either been eaten, stolen, lost, given away, lent (and never returned!), or just fallen to pieces in my hands! Luckily, I had the foresight to preserve carefully my favourite six.
