RIP Phife Dawg - Beats Rhymes Life and Death - Hip Hop, Beats, Breaks

Playing tracks by

London Funk All Stars, The Notorious B.I.G., Onyx, Eric Sermon, Organic Grooves and more.

I was in the process of making this mix when I was struck with the saddening news about the death of Phife Dog, one of my favorite MCs of all time. The first track on the mix, "Listen to the Beat", from the London Funk All Stars uses a sample from Steve Arrington's "Beddie-Biey". So does "The Chase Part II" from ATCQ. Given the subtle and slight ATCQ connection, and after crying and listening to my favorite ATCQ record, "Beats Rhymes and Life", I thought it would be appropriate to include some words from the funky diabetic on the actual mix, so I found him talking about his introduction to hip-hop, chopped it up ever so slightly, and laced it over the first song. Another song on the mix, "Funky, Not Stinky" by Organic Grooves has a vocal sample which talks about "life and death". This led me to come up with the title for the mix, "Beats Rhymes Life and Death". It consists mainly of mid 90's hip-hop, and instrumentals, but closes out with "Age of the Sun" by the Heliocentrics...
