Near the beginning of Jesus' public ministry, He preaches a sermon that has come to be known as "The Sermon on the Mount." It has become one of the most recognizable sermons ever preached. Bits and pieces of it continue to show up in various places within our culture. It is often recognized as a great lesson on morality and something to be admired by everyone, regardless of what they believe. However, to reduce it to just a monologue on morality would be to entirely miss the point of what Jesus was setting out to do.
You cannot adequately understand the Sermon on the Mount without first acknowledging that the theme of the entire Bible is God calling out a people who would find their identity in Him and in Him alone. Jesus' desire was to set up and establish a sort of "counter-culture" among those who would follow Him.
