Have you ever been given a nickname? When I was in college we gave nicknames to everyone who lived on our dorm floor. Stinky, Bus Boy, and T-bone quickly replaced Ryan, C.J., and John. Mine was Ace because I was cool as ice when the pressure was on (or at least that's how I remember it). Each name was unusual, but there was always a story behind it.

In ancient cultures, you could tell a lot about a person by the name they were given. There was usually a reason behind it, a connection to a family trait or a defining characteristic. In our culture today, this isn't nearly as common. Our motivation to name our children usually has little to do with the meaning of the name, but more so with the sound or popularity of it. It might be surprising to learn that God has more than one name.
