DJ2tee continues his exploration of Scandinavian music with an introduction to the music of Norway. Over 40 years ago Jan Garbarek and Terje Rypdal became the first Norwegian jazz musicians to make an international impact, no one could have predicted that Norway, with a population of just 5 million, would now be enjoying such an influence on modern jazz. The owner of the Rune Grammofon label, Rune Kristofferson says: "The most characteristic thing about Norwegian musicians, is their disrespect for genre. It's about people from jazz, electronic music and rock, playing with musicians from other fields and trying to create something that's not very identifiable.” It’s commonly agreed that Norway’s stunning scenery, has provided artistic inspiration for many Norwegian musicians, who mix bebop with folk-music and other elements, to create a melancholic music that reflects the landscape. Norway’s musicians have a pet name for that sound: “mountain jazz.”

Thanks Hugo. The only reason I do these mixes is to share great music with people. I hope you go on to check out these great musicians in more detail.

Are you stuck up there in the cold with nothing else to do but pump out super long deep goodness?

Rob when I was mixing this I was thinking there is a lot of Norwegian music you would dig, seeing as how you have a penchant for downtempo. I would highly recommend you digging a little deeper into this rich vein of ambience.

Jazzcat

Oh yes you're diggin' deeper into the scandinavian jazz territory......this is absolutely amazing, such a fine selection !!!

It was hard making these selections. I started with 20 hours of brilliant Norwegian music and had to edit down to two hours. For a really small country they certainly have a lot of fantastic jazz musicians. Thanks for listening Max.

When Bugge Wesseltoft's ‎– New Conception Of Jazz: Sharing album came out in 1998 it was an absolute revelation for me. Everyone should have a copy, it’s brilliant!
