DJ2tee continues his exploration of Scandinavian music with an introduction to the music of Norway. Over 40 years ago Jan Garbarek and Terje Rypdal became the first Norwegian jazz musicians to make an international impact, no one could have predicted that Norway, with a population of just 5 million, would now be enjoying such an influence on modern jazz. The owner of the Rune Grammofon label, Rune Kristofferson says: "The most characteristic thing about Norwegian musicians, is their disrespect for genre. It's about people from jazz, electronic music and rock, playing with musicians from other fields and trying to create something that's not very identifiable.” It’s commonly agreed that Norway’s stunning scenery, has provided artistic inspiration for many Norwegian musicians, who mix bebop with folk-music and other elements, to create a melancholic music that reflects the landscape. Norway’s musicians have a pet name for that sound: “mountain jazz.”
