When I lived in London, back in the day, one of my work colleagues was a jazz aficionado. One drunken rainy night in Stoke Newington he introduced to the music of Pharoah Sanders - it was a revelation! The next day I went to the Virgin shop on Sloan Square and bought “Wisdom Through Music”. This was before the jazz renaissance of the 1980s. I moved to Leicester in 1983 just as the the British Jazz scene took off, then to Leeds in 1988. That period was rich with live jazz gigs and an extraordinary club scene. This mix is highly influenced by the British jazz DJ scene and most of these tracks were played out in the clubs. This is a love letter to all the DJs that spearheaded that moment in jazz history.
