DJ2tee's History of British Jazz 1950-1969

DJ2tee's History of British Jazz 1950-1969

Chart positions

This show was 14th in the global funk - soul - jazz chart and 26th in the global jazz chart.

From 1935 until the mid 1950’s the British Jazz scene existing in almost in isolation from the rest of the world. This was almost entirely due to the Musicians Union, which barred American musicians from gigging in the United Kingdom. This led to a situation where there was little interaction between British musicians and the rest of the world. British musicians gained their chops by listening imported records. In this void, British musicians were very much influenced by US be-bop, such titans as Tubby Hayes and Ronnie Scott, showed British musician could blow with the best. But, as the fifties ended and the sixties began, a unique British style began to develop. This was more lyrical and melodic and was exemplified in the work of Stan Tracey and Michael Garrick. This compilation attempts to show the broad sweep of British Jazz across two defining decades of ground breaking music.

This mix is dedicated to Dr. Jazz, purveyor of fine Jazz music.
