Challenge Records - Part 2: The Early 60's

Playing tracks by

Dave Burgess & The Chimes, Jerry Fuller, The Fleas, The Trophies and Jan & Dean.

The small Hollywood based Challenge records got it's humble beginnings in 1956, with the backing of Cowboy star Gene Autry. Although Autry's partnership in the label only lasted a few short years, the label survived throughout the 1960's - and managed to "go with the flow", experimenting with every style of music: pop, rock, country, surf, instrumentals, rockabilly, jazz, R&B, girl group sounds, soul, psychedelia and more. This week, It's the early 1960's-with music from a studio creation called the Trophies and their first offering as the Fleas-with members Dave Burgess, Jerry Fuller, Glen Campbell & Ricky Nelson(who was secretly a member, under contract to Imperial records). Also solo recordings from Jerry Fuller and a couple of stop-over singles for Jan & Dean on their way to signing with Liberty Records.
