The small Hollywood based Challenge records got it's humble beginnings in 1956, with the backing of Cowboy singer and movie star Gene Autry. Although Autry's partnership in the label only lasted a few short years, the label survived throughout the 1960's - and managed to "go with the flow", experimenting with every style of music: pop, rock, country, surf, instrumentals, rockabilly, jazz, R&B, girl group sounds, soul, psychedelia and more. Over the next number of weeks we'll explore the label from it's humble beginnings through it's many different styles and the different bands and performers that turned up on the label. This week, it's the Roots of Challenge records: the early beginnings in 1956, the signing of Dave Burgess-who became an invaluable part of the label as a performer and behind the scenes as well.
