A Stranger with a Dark Past Charms an Irish Village in Edna O'Brien's New Novel

Irish novelist Edna O’Brien discusses her first novel in 10 years, The Little Red Chairs. Set in a small Irish village, it tells the story of an affair between a mysterious, worldly doctor and an unhappily married local woman. Their romance ends abruptly when the village learns that the doctor is a war criminal and mass murderer. The woman embarks on a journey to London and later, to The Hague in a narrative that touches on themes of war, guilt and redemption.
