John Samuelsen, president of Transport Workers Union Local 100, discusses a 10 point plan created by the men and women who work the system to address the subway delays and breakdown. One major point of the proposal deals with the signal inspection schedule, which was rolled back from every 30 days to every 90 days.
"I think there needs to be an immediate investment of cash to fix and improve the reliability problems with signals. But simultaneous to that there needs to be long term investment to address the overall problems with the signal system," Samuelson says. "The two of them go hand in hand, they have to be linked at the hip." Samuelson thinks that the city should cough up $600 million to help get the subways running with reliability like they did a few years ago.
