This mix is dedicated to Tempest Records of Birmingham(R.I.P). 33mins of heartfelt Techno.
These places really were so much more than merely a record shop. Without fail you could go into Tempest and the staff would be talking to mates or musicians who would rarely, at least while I was in the shop, buy anything! But, you know, it didn’t matter. It was about the love of music, about the culture of the city and the role that Tempest played in it.
And this is the real loss to Birmingham. The loss of yet another independent shop. The loss of the collective knowledge of the staff. The loss of a space where musicians and consumers could meet and interact with each other.
I suppose it is just the inevitable march of progress with online purchasing and downloading so prevalent in the music industry that shops are no longer needed, but until we understand that record shops are, or at least were, so much more than just a retail space then I fear Tempest won’t be the last to close.God s
