Chart positions

This show was 24th in the global folk chart.

In this folk show I'm talking to Russian-born singer, songwriter and artist, Daria Kulesh. I first met Daria as a force behind the folk group KARA, whose sound interested me immediately for its blend of English and Russian music and storytelling. We discuss the Russian political regimes under which she grew up; from the last decades of Communist rule to the landscape now dominated by an orthodox church and the dark new politics of Russia. And perhaps no less dark, there is plenty of chat about the fascination of fairy tales; but many Russian tales have an even more shadowy and deeply sexual side than our own. Needless to say, the contents and structure of her music is very interesting indeed. There is plenty music from Daria and from KARA, and her own choice of music too from artists who have influenced her along the way.

Pauline Mitchell

I first heard this interview when Daria was first interviewed by Tamsin, but now a lot later I am interested in hearing it again. I am now a friend of Daria's and also a great supporter of her music career, both as a solo singer-songwriter and performer, also musician, but also supporter of her band KARA and the other projects she is currently involved in. I hope this interview will be still available in a year or so's time so as I can hear it again then. I am so pleased that Mixcloud allow us to listen to shows again and again. Many thanks for that, Paw Mitchell x
