Episode 33 (Society): Florida, OxyContin, and heroin use in the suburbs

Have you heard of Raymond Sackler? Probably not. Well, maybe you heard of him if you read Forbes magazine’s 2015 ‘Richest People in America’ list. Sackler is worth 14 billion dollars- which more than the Bucshs, the Rockefellers, and the Mellons are each respectively worth. What did Sackler do to make his fortune? Sackler owns 100 percent of Perdue Pharma, the pharmaceutical company that manufactures OxyContin. The state of Florida helped Sackler make hundreds of millions of dollars off of the drug, and this has ultimately led to an explosion of heroin drug abuse, addiction, and overdoses in suburbs and small towns across the country. Listen to learn how Florida, a rich old white guy, and eager doctors exploited the legal system to create a heroin epidemic that is slowly swallowing our country.
