Did Marilyn Manson and violent video games, such as Doom, cause the 1999 Columbine High School Massacre? Maybe. Would banning assault-style rifles reduce the number of such horrific events, as claimed by politicians and political interest groups? Maybe. Did Super Mario Brothers result in a nation-wide epidemic of young people jumping to smash the tops of their heads, into bricks, with the hopes of breaking them (and maybe getting a coin)? No. What if there was something else that could be linked to the increase in mass-shooting events since 2000? What if this one thing was consumed by 13% of the U.S. population…would there be a reason to not study such a connection? Likely.
