Episode 3 (Law): Why Can't I Marry My First Cousin?

Episode 3 (Law): Why Can't I Marry My First Cousin?

First cousin marriages are banned in 44 states and allowed in 6 states. Some states have conditions on granting first cousin marriages such as infertility of one of the spouses. Banning first cousin marriage is supposedly to stop people from creating children that have a higher risk of having a genetic disorder. However, there are numerous other genetic and behavioral factors that create a far greater risk for children to having a genetic disorder such as simply being a teenager, being a woman over the age of 35, and alcohol, tobacco, and drug use of the mother during pregnancy...yet none of these have laws against them.
