We keep starting these things with "back in the day", when the internet was a sandy seabed that we roamed like fidgety crabs looking for tasty morsels of sound. Well here's another one, because we came across Vanese through her radio show Nodding Grand, broadcast out of New York, where she would mash up Bjork and hip hop and all the new sounds that were coming through and it was the best show for a stateside view on what was going on.
Her own production appeared on the seminal Beat Dimensions on Rush Hour (2007) with a spikey joint that marked out her unique syncopated clipped style, much of which derives from her extensive use of the Boss SP-505. It turned out she was already dropping CDRs and rapping and knocking up a great live show combining rapping, singing and beatmashing. The talent got recognised, strangely enough by a British dubstep label, and you need to check out her jams on Tectonic.
