Jon told me before the show, “I want to do something different, a little harsher sounding, a little more dance-friendly.” Over the course of about an hour, Jon did three (or was it four?) pieces he had thoughtfully constructed before the performance, using drum machines, synths, samplers, vocals, and no doubt other material. Some of the Oh Yeah ensemble joined him for one too-short piece, to great effect. But perhaps the most interesting element Jon added which I’ve never heard before, were the vocals: grunts and deep-throated rapping by Jon, along with screaming, timed to perfection to the beat, by Tiffany Minx and one of the Oh Yeah guys. This is vintage Sheffield, to be sure, but as all of Jon's work is unique to its time and place, this represents him well. Unfortunately, the sounds at these venues do not, nor are the recordings up to snuff. Still, much of this is beautiful music, and some of it is downright scary. Beware.
