Soulful Christmas Gospel

Soulful Christmas Gospel

Chart positions

This show was 1st in the global vinyl chart, 4th in the global funk chart and 6th in the global soul chart.

Ten years ago on christmas morning the entire world of music lost James Brown. The Godfather Of Soul even had a timing when he had to leave us. Let‘s remember him and other great Soul Singers who made -- and partly still make -- our lives so much better.

Merry christmas to all of my listeners, thank you for all the support this year and -- like always -- E-N-J-O-Y !!!

Tracklist is in the comments

PS: And a very special thanks to for the great promotional station break after the Otis Redding tune! His channel is always a great jazzy and educational experience. Check him out, whenever comfortable.

The verdict is in ... this is my fave #Christmas mix this year. THX!

Bill Taylor

Didn't know that about the James Brown singles being different... I only have the one Christmas LP of his (Soulful Christmas). I do have a few 45s, but never really looked to see if they were different than LP cuts.

The Soul Preacher

Well, I know it's a bit crazy but I've been comparing the different issues for decades now. His first Christmas LP from 1966 for instance came out by King records with three(!) different covers but all with the same catalog number K1010 ("James Brown And His Famous Flames Sing Christmas Songs"). I have all of the three LPs, then in 1968 came "Soulful Christmas" which was completely arranged by Pee Wee Ellis and contained the non-divided parts 1 & 2 of "Black & Proud“. After that in 1970 Brown didn't have plans for a third christmas album in such a short while but former band leader Nat Jones had prepared excellent material and Brown had some time to record the album in North Carolina (Hey America, It's Christmas). You may have the double CD of JB with the "complete" christmas recordings. I recommend to read the essay by Alan Leeds and you will be well informed as well as entertained. Brown’s fourth christmas album is from 1999 and is not King or Polydor related. Polydor though had issued the third Christmas LP of Brown with their own cover in 1970. That was the time when Brown switched his label from King to Polydor. Just talking out of the head :-) Cheers, The Soul Preacher

The Soul Preacher

… recorded live on a Friday evening, January 14, 1972. At the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles. Among others in church are: Aretha’s father, Reverend C.L. Franklin, James Cleveland (p), Bernard Purdie (dr) and Cornell Dupree (g). The tune is from her Atlantic double album "Amazing Grace". Produced by Jerry Wexler and Aretha Franklin and the music was arranged by the Queen Of Soul herself. On many tunes she also plays the piano. I think it was this year (2016) when the album came out with bonus material as a part of a CD box that contains 19 of her Atlantic albums. … Amen :-) Merry christmas to you and yours!

We are SO smooth:) Glad we could give you a slick Christmas 'station break'. But it wouldn't be anything without your excellent selections and sequencing. Happy Holidays from the swamp...........Regards, DrJ

The Soul Preacher

Thanks again, DrJ. The Bayou is certainly the grooviest swamp! I’m so glad I could make it to Louisiana this year. It makes me breath the music on a new and higher level.

Ivy Pittman

Just the right kind of music on this snowy December day.

The Soul Preacher

Thank you, Ivy Pittman. It's so good to be heard in New Jersey. I've been to the NJPAC some years back! Merry christmas to you and your family!
