A new survey carried out by the charity Barnardos has found that 1 in 10 parents are forced to get into debt to pay for back-to-school costs.
They are calling on the Government to reduce the burden of school costs on parents. They say an additional €100 million is needed every year to provide free primary education for all children.
Opposition parties have been reacting to this new survey with Sinn Féin saying, the Government has done nothing to help the situation, and that each child should have the support they need to enable their education, as enshrined in the Constitution.
