'Pick of the Pops' on Radio 2 with Alan Freeman: 14/12/63; 20/12/69; 18/12/71 & 17/12/77 Rundown

Playing tracks by

Kathy Kirby, Isaac Hayes, T Rex and Benny Hill.

Here's the first three of seven December POTPs which I have. I don't know why I didn't record the 1977 one, unless it was due to lack of tape, but I DID record the final chart rundown. Next four coming soon.

Think that's the late Tim Gudgin saying "three" at the very start here - he was still doing occasional Radio 2 newsreading shifts at the time; the last I can remember was, I think, the day Dusty Springfield died. The thing about "Melting Pot" when you hear it now is: could a song using some of those terms ever have been seen as remotely right-on (no wonder Alan Partridge sang it)? The 1963 chart here is from 12th December 1998; the 1969 and (brief) 1977 charts from 19th December 1998; the 1971 chart from 20th December 1997. Glad you liked the 1989 chart I uploaded btw!

I think this was the first time I had played the 1963 chart since recording it so the beginning was a surprise to me. For one awful moment I thought the tape might be blank! Thanks for the recording dates. I didn't bother to work them out as I knew I could never fit them into the title as I usually do. One is only allowed a very limited amount of words of course and I even had to omit the word 'chart' before 'rundown' as I had used up all the permitted space. I completely agree with you about the lyrics to 'Melting Pot', in fact I was thinking the very same thing whilst playing it and yes, your 1989 chart was superb. I was in Australia at that precise time so listening to it brought back some amazing memories for me.
