This was an emotional letter for Paul to write, and that becomes clear quickly. He calls Timothy his beloved son (1 Tim says ‘true son’), proclaims his clear conscience and consistent prayers, his longing to see Timothy, and Timothy’s tears. “Longing to see you, even as I recall your tears, so that I may be filled with joy.” And what would give Timothy’s spiritual father joy? That Timothy would live out his mother’s faith. A faithful father’s greatest joy is that his children are faithful as well.
