Scripture: JOHN 19:1-30
Ten days ago, my father-in-law, Ed Senechal, died in Portland, Maine. Today I want to tell you something about the blessings of his life, and to reflect on his death in light of the events of this central week of Christian life.
Ed was a chemical engineer who worked for a time in the paper industry, at a mill just outside of Portland. Later in his career, he bought a dry cleaning business and ran that until he retired. He was married to Mary’s mother, Elizabeth, for sixty-three years, and together they had three children, Mary, Marc, and Mike. That’s the bare bones.
Underneath that, and undergirding everything, were abundant gifts from God. Ed was a man who relished life. I confess I didn’t fully get him when I first met Mary. He came from an extremely tight-knit French-Canadian family with its own culture and ways of being. Sometimes
